How to Tether Windows Mobile with Mac OS X

After getting my MacBook Pro, I was wondering how will I connect my Windows Mobile device to use as modem to connect to the internet.

In places where I cant get proper wifi signals, I normally use my phone connected to my previous Acer Aspire One Netbook. Doing so in a Windows XP machine was easy but how about my Mac?

How to?

  • Turn on Bluetooth on both the Windows Mobile 6 and Mac
  • On the Mac, go to System Preferences and Bluetooth
  • On Windows Mobile normally under Start > Settings > Connections
  • Ensure your Windows Mobile is set as discoverable

  • On the Mac, Click on the “+” at the bottom to add New Device

tether2

  • Click Continue and you will see your Windows Mobile Device

  • You will see the below screen. At the same moment you will see a prompt to enter Key into your Windows Mobile. Quickly enter this as there is a timeout. This is necessary to securely pair both the Mac and Windows Mobile.

  • When you see the below screen just click continue

tether7

  • Click Quit. You are done pairing both devices

  • You will see that the device is now paired but not connected.

  • At the bottom of the screen, click as shown and click Connect to Network
  • You should now be connected to the Windows Mobile device

  • On your Windows Mobile, go to Start > Programs > Internet Sharing
  • Select Bluetooth PAN as PC Connection
  • Click Connect at the bottom of the screen. This allows the bluetooth devices to share Internet Connection.
  • You are done!
  • Launch your browser on the Mac and surf away!

Conclude

I have tested on both Mac OS X Leopard(10.5) and Snow Leopard(10.6). It should work on previous versions as long as your hardware has bluetooth. There should not be an issue with Windows Mobile 6 or 6.1 as there are not difference.

Ensure you have subscribed for data services through your telco, else you end up receiving a huge bill. As for me, I am paying just SGD17 per month for 50GB worth of data.
