Google Chrome – A love hate situation
Google is going to dominate the world or atleast the Internet world.
Here is why:
- Google Search
- Google Email(Gmail)
- Google Apps which includes docs, calendars and such
- Google Chrome
- Google Android mobile OS
- Google Chrome OS (soon)
- and so many more
Chrome Features
Let me tell you the features I like. Read the rest here.
One box for everything – The address bar is used for obvious purpose and also for searches. The default is google search but you can change it to any other search engine of choice.
Tab page – This is excellent. It shows previews of your most visited page and the bookmarks too. Tabs you have previously closed shows up here too.
If you happen to close the entire window with many tabs accidently there is a easy way to bring it all back again. Like magic.
On the new page you will see a portion called Recently closed. Just click on any icons with the enclosed brackets and you have all the tabs restored. Superb!
Crash Control – This is one hell of a feature. Smart people at Google! Each individual tab runs as a seperate process. If a tab hangs or misbehaves, chrome’s task manager can be brought up to end the tab or process
Incognito Mode – Ok now all browser has it. Some times it is called a pr0n mode. You can watch p0rn without leaving a trace in your pc.
If you are sharing pc or using any one else’s PC you can use this mode. Saves the trouble of clearing cache.
Look and Feel
The first time got me all lost. Not lost in awe, just lost. It was just too clean. Maybe I was so used to Firefox that this is just too plain.
I badly need the Bookmark Toolbar thingy that I used in Firefox. Chrome allows that too.
Click on the Spanner Icon and Click ‘Always Show Bookmarks toolbar’. Nice to see you toolbar!
Annoyances
There are quite a number of annoyances. I am not sure if it is just unique to me but here it goes.
I was thinking that this browser will be standard compliant, but is it really.
Pages
Some sites display weird. There will be some extra dots and lines. It looks perfectly fine when I am using IE8 and Firefox 3.5
Below is a site I am creating. See the weird dot-like character? Why the hell it is there?
Below is a HTML/DHTML page. The images are supposed to be at the end of the page but it appears right on top.
Password Auto saves
I have a 3 domains making use of Google Apps. Each one has a control panel that needs to be logged. Chrome seems to get confused with autofills.
It is fine with me but why the hell doesnt it allow me to edit them. Lets say the username of a login screen is wrong. I could simple edit that. But Chrome does not allow me to change till and hit sign-in and the server gives a response that it is a wrong username password.
I am afraid that I cant show the screen shot as I have already cleared the cache.
Concluding thoughts
This annoyances puts me off as certain sites are not loading correctly or there is an error that the browser is not compatible to that site. I will leave it on my machine and go back to Firefox for now. Hope there are some answers to these issues.
Otherwise this is an excellent browser. Fast, safe and clean.
