Windows 7 – How to get it cheap

8 July 2009 1 views No Comment

By now most know that Windows 7 will be available from 22 October 2009. In the next 2 weeks Microsoft would have finalized their code.

I have tried the Windows 7 RC1 and quite impressed. It takes much less resource than Vista or the same but it is much more responsive. Boot-up and shutdown speed and excellent on the current 2.5 yr old pc that I am using. Read my review here and here.

Pre-Order

If you are looking for a discount, Microsoft is offering 50% off for an upgrade CD which you will need to pre-order. Sadly, it is for the US , Canada, UK and Japan. See the MS Pre-order page.

You can purchase from the online stores mentioned in the pre-order page.

Work-around

Looking and searching around in the world wide wibble, I don’t see any news of any pre-order being offered here. I doubt that it will be offered here at all. Hope I am wrong!

If you very keen on getting this excellent OS and cant wait to get it, there is a workaround. Yes, there is!

STEP 1

vpost

Sign-up at vpost.com.sg and update your address. VPOST allows you to order on any US/UK/Japan website and ship it here

STEP 2

Take note of the address provided upon log-on.

Basically, when you order from an overseas merchant (eg. USA-Amazon), you specify the US address specified in vpost. Your item will be delivered to the vpost address.

STEP 3

Go to the merchant website provided in the MS page. I personally prefer amazon.com as they have provided great service and I already have an account with them.

All merchant offer Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. I believe for most users Home Premium would be sufficient which is at USD$49.99.

STEP 4

Upon ordering and making payment, save the invoice that shows on the screen. You will receive an invoice from Amazon too.

Email or fax this invoice to vpost at:

Email(invusa@vpost.com.sg)
/ Fax (6841 3982)

STEP 5

They will bill you accordingly when they receive the poduct from Amazon. You will have to make a payment for the shipping charges before it is shipped to Singapore.

How Much

Based on my calculation, you will pay either 49.99 for Home Premium and 99.99 for the Professional. Mind that these are upgrade versions.

Below is just an approximation with current USD to SGD conversion rate:

Win 7 Home Premium (USD49.99)
SGD74 + SGD12.40(shipping) = SGD86.40

Win 7 Professional (USD99.99)
SGD148 + SGD12.40(shipping) = SGD160.40

Conclusion and Thoughts

Upon the release of the product you might need to wait a little longer for it to be deivered to you. Amazon will take few days to deliver to vpostUSA address. Vpost will take time to process that and email you that they have received it and will bill you for the shipping charges. After which the product will be delivered to you.

Not knowing if the pre-order will be available here is another issue. What happens if it ends up cheaper here when they offer it here? You will be banging your head against the wall for wasting money.

I will not be ordering any now. I will wait till next year when its time to upgrade my hardware and purchase Windows 7 at the same time.
