Netbook – Do you need it?
The netbook craze has been going on for some time. It all started with some UMPC and ever since Asus released their EEEPC, it has caught on like wild fire.
See my review here on the Acer Aspire One.
So what exactly is a netbook?
It is a downsized laptop if you would call it such.
- - 8 to 9 inch screens
- - approximately 1 kilogram
- - Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor(low power)
- - 1GB RAM
- - SSD or HDD drives
- - Windows XP Home or Linux OS
Usually netbooks don’t multi task very well due to the low powered processor. It is meant mostly for Internet access and light word processing on the go. Yes, when you are about and moving.
Do you need a netbook?
My answer is Yes and No. It all depends on what you need. If you need a much more powerful system which you will need for heavy processing like photo editing and other intensive stuff, go and get a 13 or 14 inch laptop. Mac anyone?
I do not need such power as I have a desktop to do my heavy processing needs. Nothing beats a big screen and comfort of your home.
I travel up and down on long journeys to work. I use this machine to peck away my thoughts or ideas for blog or even watch a movie. Don’t even tell me that you can do it on the iphone. I want a good keyboard. Not peck at mobile phones puny freaking screen.
During overseas travel I am sure you will take lotsa photos. You need a backup device right?. There you go, you have in your hands. The 160GB HDD with my Acer Aspire One comes in handy.
Should I get it?
There are so many sites out there reviewing devices. Google it and read them up. Then go to a reputable shop and test them out. Ask the sales guy a thing or two.
You are free to contact me if you need any help at all.
If you don’t need a notebook/laptop and prefer a much smaller computing device for your Internet needs then go for the netbook by all means.
