Ubuntu in 7 Days: Day 7

Day1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5 | Day 6 | Day 7

Welcome to the final Day of the seven Day article. Here we will see some PC maintenance that you can do to have your Ubuntu system clean and efficient as ever. It is known fact that very little maintenance is required, unlike Windows, but we can do some clearing to opimise performance.

Defragment

First thing that come to my mind as a Windows power user is defragmenting. Linux Files System (ext3) is built in such a way that defragmenting not required. So no more defragmenting. Yay!

Cleaning up programmes

Since this is a new system, you might be experimenting with stuff. Installing new softwares and ignoring them and so on. One of the best maintenance is to get rid of un neccessary softwares.

Click on Applications >> Add/Remove and remove any unwanted or un used applications from there. You will be saving some disk space. Ensure you know what you are removing.

Other tips

Ubuntu forums has a few useful tips that I recommend. I suggest doing #Tip1 and #Tip2 and #Tip3. Just be careful on the others. It might inadvertendtly make some system changes.

I have tried them and there have been no issues.

Conclusion

There is very little maintenance to be done other than the above. I suggest doing the maintenance monthly or even bi-monthy or maybe quarterly. It is up to you to schedule the maintenance.

You will need to include virus scanning as a weekly maintenance if you are using AVG Antivirus as mentioned in Day 5.

I went full Linux ubuntu back when it was H edition (forgot the name I think Hoary or something lol) I wiped my HD completely and installed linux and forced myself to learn it. I got books and everything. I think the only thing that really frustrated me at the time was drivers for my wireless thumb drive, and GTK. I would lose my gui interface I dont know how many times. Other than that I LOved Ubuntu. It has came such a long way I was thinking of giving it a go again. I know I got the Live CD or possible dual boot if needs be. Ive been testing Windows 7 and I am loving it. If there was ever a reason to give windows another go its windows 7. I still might give it a go in the near future tho

I dual booted my system and still have it on my spare HDD. I lived with it for maybe 2 weeks and loved it. But had to go back and forth to Windows XP. There are some apps that I use, especially photoshop, that I really need. Gimp does not cut it.
I understand ur frustration over wifi device on Ubuntu. Intel based wifi device works fine but for others there are some tweaks to do. This kinda hard work will put off a lot of people. Installations should be few mouse clicks away and should avoid ‘command line’ stuff completely.
I am hoping Ubuntu or any distro improves further over time. Also hope some apps from Windows are ported over.

For now Windows 7 is doing great.
