Each brand has its own proprietary charger that makes life difficult for everyone. Some even have different chargers for different series of hand sets.

There are so many phones which can easily make use of mini USB to charge as well as transfer data. This should be made a standard and all mobile phone manufacturers should be forced to adopt it. That might not be entirely agreeable by manufacturers as money is made in accessories as well.
