In my previous post I have detailed out the reasons for using this distribution and also a list of hardware and software that needs to be working on my system. Here you will find DAY 1 of my 7 part series, where I will be going through with you on installing Ubuntu.

Content

  • Downloading Ubuntu and burning to a CD
  • Downloading Ubuntu to USB stick and booting from it
  • Configuring PC HDD – Single HDD or multiple HDD
  • Installing Ubuntu
    • Selecting HDD and Partioning
    • Other Configurations

Downloading Ubuntu Linux 8.10

Step1: Go to Ubuntu.com and download the ISO image. Direct link.
Step2: Write/Burn to a DVD or CD

Watch the Video.

Installing from a USB thumb drive

An alternative way to install Ubuntu or any Linux distribution is by using a third party software called UNetbootin, which downloads and creates a bootable thumbdrive. Ensure your target systems’ BIOS is able to support boot from USB.

I will not repeat the tutorial. Rich Menga of pcmech.com has detailed out in his post: How to install Ubuntu with no optical drive.

Installation

I will be dual booting Ubuntu with Windows 7 Beta on my Lenovo Y300 notebook for this demonstration.

Specs

  • Lenovo Y300
  • Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz
  • 200GB HDD – partitioned
  • 1.5GB of DDR2 memory

I will be demonstrating the installation process in the video below.

Conclusion

Installing Ubuntu is a straight forward affair. It is simple and recognises the installed OS immediately.

I would recommend to install any versions of Windows first before installing Linux. So far Windows installation does not recognise any Linux distribution if it is installed first. There are workaround but we will leave it out for some other time,

Look forward for more in Day 2 – Hardware Essentials. So what are you waiting for. Download Ubuntu and Install NOW! Follow along with my 7 Day Series and you will be all set to replace Windows.

Edit:

For those dual booting Ubuntu with Windows you might want to follow this link on instruction on how to set Windows to boot up as default OS.
