Ubuntu in 7 Days: Day 0

WindowsToUbuntu

Can Ubuntu Linux completely replace Windows OS?

This is what I will be discussing here in my next few articles.
As mentioned in my previous post, I took the challenge to use Ubuntu for 7 Days and hopefully achieve that successfully. Be sure to follow my post in 7 parts by subscribing to my RSS email feed.

Why Ubuntu and not other distributions?

Ubuntu is well received and a popular distribution. It has received many positive reviews and has made using Linux much simpler than any other distribution I have come to know. I have used Ubuntu since version 6 and have since followed every release.

Grocery List

Since I am doing this on a personal level, here are the list of things that need to interface with Ubuntu. If at all Ubuntu has to pass as my desktop OS, then it has to work with all gadgets that I have. I should have all the alternate software/applications to replace my Windows applications.

An OS should be easy to use with minimal amount of tweaking to go on with our daily task. Linux is known for its command line driven installation and functions. Here, I will try my best not to touch the command line at all or keep to the minimum.

Hardware that needs to work:

  1. Sound and Video – Should work out of box
  2. USB and External HDD drives
  3. Webcam
  4. HP Deskjet printer
  5. Canon and Sony Digital Still Camera
  6. Camcorders
  7. Huawei Broad Band on Mobile device (by SingTel)
  8. HTC Touch Diamond (Windows Mobile 6.1)
  9. Genius F-Pen G350 Tablet

Softwares / OS Functionality:

  1. Audio Player – Winamp compatible
  2. Audio Editing
  3. Video Player
  4. Video Editing
  5. Photo and Graphics editing
  6. Photo & Video Manager – Picasa compatible
  7. FTP
  8. Blogging – Windows Live Writer compatible
  9. Auto Startup
  10. Scheduling Tasks
  11. PC Maintenance – defrag/optimizing
  12. Compression Utility – WinRAR compatible
  13. Write and Read to NTFS partitions

What’s Next?

The above list is not exhaustive but is the minimal stuff I need working. Do you want to know if I am a Linux convert? Then follow through with me for the next sever articles that will be followed through this month.

You might want to subcribe to my email or RSS feed for updates

I am more than willing to listen to what you have to say. Any suggestions of software to work and compatibility issues you have encountered? Or are you using any Linux distribution as your main OS?

Yes , I am using Linux. I do hope you write up a good article on how to really do up your linux. It would be nice to see

As for compatibility issue , you’ll learn later on how powerful it can be. My advice is , don’t be afraid of using the command line (Terminal).

You’ll get the hang of it. Trust me , its way better then Windows. I do have Linux on my old Pentium III , my routers (yes) and not to mention my playstation 2. Thats the beauty of Linux

I might give it a shot later on my fujitsu u1010 with ubuntu mobile/netbook edition !

    Hi Prasys,
    Thanks for your encouraging comment.

I am trying out Ubuntu now and will post up 7 separate articles. I have used Linux b4 but have not put too much thought into it. Now is the time to make a move.

My aim is to proof using Linux and transitioning to it is easy. For command line based stuff, I am trying to avoid in this series. But I think it cannot be avoided in certain cases.

Do look out for my next one soon.

    Thanks again

You can’t certain avoid command line. You may try your best . Try to be friend with the command line , you’ll need it. However these days ubuntu makes it possible to do everything (almost everything via the GUI) , which makes new comers such as yourself easier to adapt to the linux environment

Wishing you all the best !

Oh by the way , you might want to get gravatar for your wordpress. Just sign up for one and you could use your picture/etc as your avatar :P
